◆将来においてありえない事柄
＜Word＞
・countryside
・sabbatical：（形容詞）安息日の、研究休暇の
・leave：（名詞）〔休暇　許可、喜び、賛成が原義〕
・semester：米豪独などの大学で一学年２学期制の、学期。　３学期制は（英）term（米）trimester、４学期quarter
（１）＜If…were to…，…過去形助動詞＋原型不定詞＞
●２１６（１２：却下条件）
　If we were to move to the countryside , we would be able to buy a bigger house.
　were to 原型がポイント。ほとんど仮定法過去と同じだが、「しかしそうもいかない」というニュアンスが含まれる。

（２）＜If…should…，…（過去形助動詞／※現在形助動詞）＋原型不定詞＞
●２１７（１２：却下条件）
　If I should fail , I would try again.
　
6/19：２１７、２１８は将来においてありえない事柄を表す表現。２１６は「しかしそうもいかない」というニュアンス。だが、２１７、２１８は、「将来においてありえない」というより「未だ未確定」という感じがする。とすれば、開放条件であると言えるので、直接法が使われてもいいのではないか？いや、主語が「I」だからいいのか。

●２１８（１２：却下条件）
　If I should take a sabbatical leave next year , it will be in autumn semester , but it should be impossible.
　この最後のshouldは、助動詞現在形の法助動詞だろうか？
※6/19：shouldを用いた仮定法は、主節の助動詞を現在形で用いることもある。 

◆仮定法過去完了
　＜If…過去完了… , …過去形助動詞＋過去不定詞＞：条件副詞節＆過去の事実に反する仮定。

＜Word＞

・２１５（１２：却下条件）
　：If you had really loved me , you couldn't have said that.
　仮定法過去。主節が助動詞過去＋have＋p.pになる。このcouldはwouldじゃダメなの？ 

＊仮定法現在&仮定法過去
＊仮定法は「話者の想像＝願望・仮定」を述べる。（命令法は「話者の意志＝提案・要求・希望」）
＜Word＞
insiste：〜を強く主張する。要求する。
resign：辞職する（leave / quit / step down）
director：取締役、（映画などの）監督
detest：〜をひどく嫌う
decline：〜を丁寧に断る。（１）減少する。 

＊ quit　（動）辞める
 　quite　（副）かなり
 　quiet　（形）静か
◆仮定法現在：話者の提案要求を表す動詞に続く＜that節＞の中で用いられる。
２４４（１３：態度・意見表明）
　：I insisted that he [should] resign as director.
　　　shouldはイギリス英語で仮定法現在の代わりに用いられる。まぁ訳を考えると、確かにそうだ。


◆仮定法過去：動詞の過去形を用いる。＜was＞よりも＜were＞を用いる。
　　　　　　　＜If...過去形… …過去形助動詞＋原型不定詞＞
２１３（１２：条件付け；却下条件）
　：Even if i detested them all , it would not prove that I was incapable of understanding Japan.
２１４（１２）
　：If I were you , I would decline the offer.

　◇理由のFor【１１−６−１】
　２１・He found it increasingly difficult to read , for his eyes were failing.

＊開放条件＝条件節の実現が、話者にとって不確実である。
＊却下条件＝話者にとって、「まあ、無いわな」ってのが却下条件。仮定法はこれ。
＜Word＞
quite : かなり、相当（very）米７、８０%。英「全く」「まぁまあ」発音強弱で決まる。
frustrated : （２）欲求不満の
stand out : 目立つ
automatically : （副）自動的に、無意識的に、機械的に
S assume O to be C : （明確な証拠はなくても）OをCだととる、みなす。
          　　　　　　　; assume that ~根拠ない　; think that〜　根拠ある
prove : 証明する
the contrary : 名）逆；〔論理〕反対対当；反対のもの；相反するものの一方。
　　　　　　contrary : 形）全く反対の 


２０７（条件付け：開放条件）
　：You are likely to be quite frustrated if you want to stand out and be a star quickly.
　　　quiteをquietと間違えて、随分わけのわからない時間を過ごした。アホである。




２０９（条件付け：開放条件）
　：Any Westerner in Japan is almost automatically assumed to be an American unless he can prove the contrary.
　　　assume　には思い込む、勘違いするという意味がある。【代表的なのは役目・責任などを取る】【外観を呈する、様相を帯びる】といった意味なので、イメージとしては、実体がないがとりあえず当てはめるような感じか？


　◆if節〜の条件節内が現在形なのは、Open Condition（開放条件）と呼ばれるからで、その事実が実現するか不確実——「開放」されているからだという。一方でRejected Condition（却下条件）は話者がその実現はありえないと「却下」されているから。仮定法で動詞の時制が変化するのは、却下条件の方。

＜ワード、フレーズ＞
  • pattern：名詞：傾向（模範の型になろうとする事）、模様、原型
  • weaken (vt)：〜を弱める
  • no longer：もはや〜ない。これは、not …any longer　の変形だが、それよりも強意だという。
　＊おもろい、they no longer really worked →they do not really worked any longerと、「not + any 」＝「no」とできる。
　＊no more ...than　の応用として似た形があるから、位置を確認して、もっとしみこませなければならないな。
  • opportunity：〜をする機会。受動的な可能性についてはchanceを用いる。なのでto doを率いる場合が多々ある。面白い文例は、ダイレクトメールの決まり文句らしい、Opportunity knocks (at the door) only once.= Oppotunity knocks but once. というチャンスは一度きりという表現。
  • for a time：しばらく、少しの間
  • behavior patterns：行動様式（模範の型になろうとする習性、とでも訳せる）
  • leave (vt)：第五文型SVOCの形で＜人・事が＞O＜人・物・事＞を…のままにしておく、状態にしておく《◆Cは形容詞、分詞、副詞》とあるが、これだとO be V の形にはできないのではないか？だとしたら、Ⅱ［あとに残す］という意味での、〜を残すという意味を取るのだろうか？よくわからない。
